To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of its founder, the Gerda Henkel Foundation launched the Lisa Maskell Fellowships to support young humanities researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia in 2014. The program represents the single largest international funding initiative for PhD students in the Foundation’s history and provides financial stipends for full-time PhD students for African humanities researchers at the educational institutions in Stellenbosch (South Africa), Kampala (Uganda), and Accra (Ghana). The programme also includes accompanying workshops and infrastructure development. The Lisa Maskell Fellowships follow the goal of strengthening the academic landscape of partnering countries and counteracting the emigration of qualified young scholars. Through the initiative, the Foundation supports the endeavours of leading educational institutions in Africa to provide their PhD scholars with an excellent academic education.
