Negotiating your first job offer in academia can be exciting but daunting. This workshop will help demystify this important process. The co-facilitators, Alicia Decker and Natasha Erlank, between them have many years of experience as heads of departments in universities in the US and South Africa, and as visiting scholars in universities located in Eastern and Western Africa. Natasha and Alicia will offer helpful tips as you prepare to negotiate your first job offer by addressing a range of issues, such as: understanding what might be included in a total compensation package, such as startup funds, teaching load, summer salary, and benefits; conducting research on compensation for similar positions; understanding your own needs and priorities; and maintaining a confident yet friendly tone that communicates enthusiasm for the position and institution. Afterwards we will open up the forum for discussion and questions from participants.
