Call for Applications – 2024 PhD Thesis Prize of the GIS African Studies in France

The GIS African Studies in France (CNRS, UAR 2999) is organizing its 2024 Thesis Prize, awarding two winners. Each winner will receive €2,500 to support the publication of their thesis by ENS Éditions.

Eligibility
Eligible works must be written in French and defended in France between January 1 and December 31, 2023, in any discipline within the humanities, social sciences, and literature (e.g., anthropology, geography, history, languages and literature, political science, sociology, archaeology…).

The GIS African Studies Thesis Prize aims to reward two research works on the African continent and its diasporas that stand out for their excellence and particularly innovative content (empirical, methodological, or theoretical).

Selection Criteria

  • Quality of the contribution to African and diaspora studies

  • Originality of the topic and innovative approach relevant to the field of African studies

  • Quality of writing with a view to publication

Timeline

  • Application deadline: February 26, 2024, at midnight (Paris time)

  • Pre-selection jury: end of March (8 theses selected)

  • Final jury: June (two co-winners selected)

  • With defense reports available for the jury

This prize is not cumulative with other thesis awards. Selected candidates must notify the organizers if they receive another prize before the final jury. Similarly, theses already scheduled for publication are not eligible.

Evaluation Process
Two juries composed of GIS African Studies members (and possibly external scholars) will review submissions. Each thesis will be evaluated by two reviewers. Supervisors and committee members from the defense are excluded from jury duty, though members from the candidate’s affiliated lab may participate.

Winners’ Obligations

  • Attend the award ceremony hosted by GIS African Studies in September 2024 at Campus Condorcet

  • Submit a revised chapter of the thesis for publication to ENS Éditions before the end of 2024
